Civic and Diocesan Art Gallery
Villa of the Mosaics
The Civic and Diocesan Art Gallery is located in the Palazzo dei Canonici, built in 1542. It houses various works owned by the parish of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Municipality of Spello, as well as pieces recently acquired as donations from private individuals. The works are placed between the XIII and XVIII centuries, including a diptych by Cola Petruccioli, a Madonna and Child attributed to Andrea d’Assisi and the Triptych by the Master of the Assumption of Amelia.
The visit of the village of Spello must include the amazing Villa of the Mosaics. In July 2005, just outside the walls of Spello, in the locality of Sant’Anna, a large Roman monumental complex came to light. The remains of an ancient mosaic emerged from the earth. Hence excavations started which were followed by restoration. Careful work has made it possible to recover and put on display one of the most prestigious archaeological discoveries of the last few years.
At the Villa dei Mosaici in Spello, the sense of magnificence begins from the outside, with a modern architectural structure in harmonious dialogue with both history and the surrounding landscape.
In the museum, itineraries have been created to visit the rooms of the Villa, an area designed as a multimedia / educational room and an information point.
